How can you tell a good cut of a princess cut diamond? It doesn't say "Very good" or such on the certificate.?

How can you tell a good cut of a princess cut diamond? It doesn't say "Very good" or such on the certificate. Is there something else that you should be looking at in terms of measurement like depth, etc? I know on sites like BlueNile it will tell you what they are, but not at the actual jewelers. How do you tell if it's actually a good cut?

  1. GIA Certified diamonds WILL disclose the Cut. Don't buy an uncertified diamond! Also, bluenile are not to be trusted PLEASE just use reputable jeweller!
  2. At an actual jewelry store where you see the diamonds in person, you look to see if there is window in the bottom. It should be cut to a point on the bottom and have quite a bit of sparkly. You do not want a window, which is a black or dull area where that bottom point is, because then there isn't anything for the other facets to reflect light which is what gives you the sparkle. Instead, the light goes right through the bottom. That said, most diamonds (and other gemstones) are not large enough that you can see with the naked eye whether the cut is good or not. An amateur is not going to know what to look for, nor do they have the professional equipment to look at it. You and those you run into are not going to sit and analyze the stone so you really don't need to worry about that. Most people just look at it and say "ooh sparkly!" and move on. Unless you are a jeweler yourself, just get the one you like the look of best that you can afford. All the technicalities they tell you to look for, the average person on the street doesn't know what they are for, nor do they really care when it comes down to it. The only thing they care about is that it's pretty and sparkly.
  3. I wouldn't buy anything without a certificate to back up its specifications: Cut ( most important ) Color Clarity Carat weight Certificate ( AGS or GIA, stay away from EGL ) I think you should get away from that jeweler! I got my wife's ring at Diamond Brokers of Florida. Jan and Brad are great! See: http://www.dbof.com/shipping.htm * * *
