Platinum diamond solitaire ring - can suntan oil/salt water affect the metal/diamond atal!?
Hi I know this is probably a really silly question bu Id just like to put my mind at rest! Ive have just got engaged and have a beautiful diamond solitaire on platinum band ring and am going on holiday (beach type holiday) and am worried that using suntan oil and lotion/ swimming in salt water etc might make the ring go funny! (lose its shine etc!) I know Platinum is one of the strongest metals and theres no way I want to keep taking it on and off (more likely to lose it!) so really just want confirmation that they kind of metal cannot be harmed! Also if anyone knows of certain elemets platinum can get damaged in (apart from the really obvious) please let me know! Sorry it may seem an obvious question but Im in love with this ring at the moment and would be so upset if I ruined it in anyway!!! Many thanks

- no, twill be fine
- it could be ruined ask the jeweler and you can keep it in the hotel safe. just do not forget it when you leave.
- I have diamonds set in gold and platinum and have worn them all day every day for more than a decade - that's a lot of sun, sea, sand and suncream! Your jewellery will be absolutely fine, don't worry.
- You really are obsessed with your ring...I have a platinum ring that is special to me...but it is insured so if the worst happens it is not the end of the world. It IS just an object and I do have my husband...but anyway. I don't wear it to do things where I could accidentally knock the stone out...it would be foolish to wear it outside when I am doing yardwork. I take it off when I am using chemicals..like bleach...so pretty much when I am doing house work or cooking, making pastry--I take the ring off..I don't want bread dough in my setting. At the beach I don't want sun tan lotion in the settings either. I take all my jewlry an have it locked up at the safety deposit box at the bank before I go on vacation. I do my best to take good care of it..but I don't lay around day and night worrying about it...I wouldn't enjoy it if that were the case. I am in love with the man who gave it to me..not the ring.
- I have a diamond/gold/platinum man's ring, which for about 20 years I wore without removing. I suppose the only thing you need to be careful of is the diamond when you are in water, it's possible (depending on how the diamond is set) that over a long period of time the water may loosen the stone- but unlikely. As for the metal, platinum is safe in salt water and even more interestingly gold is effectively immune to sea water - it doesn't even tarnish, which is why it's easy to find real gold on the sea bed, as it stays glittery!!! Hope this helps. Si.
- I've been wearing mine through all kinds of conditions, including the ones you're worried about for 15 years with no problem congratulations on the engagement and have a great holiday!
- I think to be safe, I would call the jeweler where the ring was purchased and they will give you the best possible answer. Any jeweler would work, but the person who cares most about your enjoyment of the ring is the person who sold it to you.
- Chemistry says that neither platinum nor diamond can be damaged by salty water or suntan lotion. Platinum CAN be corroded by strong solutions of cyanides, or by fluorine gas, but I seriously doubt you'll come across any of those unless you're in a chemistry lab. Ditto aqua regia (a mixture of strong nitric and sulphuric acids), the only thing I can think of that will actually dissolve platinum. I can't think of anything that will damage a diamond, except another diamond, or being heated past about 3000 degrees C. If you get smears of oil or deposits of salt on the ring, it may look a trifle unsightly while it's there, but it won't actually affect it at all. Oil will come off with a clean tissue or one of those cloths for cleaning glasses, and salt will just wash off with tapwater.
- Jewelry should be used with care . Nothing will happen to the diamond ( shine or polish) unless to hit it somewhere, but the platinum shine will wear off. Beach Sand is made up of quartz and it will scratch off the metal . Also the setting might get loose . So be careful. Mithun Gemologist, Jeweller.
