- PLEASE don't attempt anything like that yourself. You would need to heat up the ring before bending the prongs back. If you don't know what you are doing you will most likely damage the lot. As to tools, you would need a torch, pliers etc. and a whole lot of training and experience. You can evaluate the diamond yourself. Most diamonds in jewelry are evaluated in the setting. You can measure the diameter and look up lists to estimate the carat weight of the stone. You can also, with the naked eye and with a 10x magnifier, look at the diamond and see whether it has inclusions and how many. You can estimate the colour by holding the diamond against a white sheet of paper. Have a read on the internet to see about diamond grading.
- You have to be extremly careful to remove a diamond from the ring. Your diamond can easily chip or break along the process. Professional jewelers use variety of tools to remove diamonds form the rings such as pliers, cutters, etc. If you still interested then take a look at this jewelry tool company for a selection of tools: http://www.gesswein.com/catalog/index.cfm?cat=2&sub=3&catalog=1&CFID=2414957&CFTOKEN=97333700
