Diamond - princess vs brilliant cut?
Anyone have any views as to which diamond is better for an engagement ring? One jeweller told me that the princess cut gets dirty easier and so loses its sparkle quicker. Has anyne experienced this? Some also told me the brilliant cut is more expensive than the princess cut (for the same colour, size etc) although another jeweller said that was not true. Any ideas on this? PS. the ring is for me - I can't decide what to get!

- Is this for you or your girl? If it's for your girl, all you need to do is find out which she prefers. Engagement rings are beautiful no matter how you look at them. The most important thing to think about is which one the girl loves because that ring will be cherished forever and passed down to generations.
- umm i am not sure you need to go to a few stores and ask. but i am sure she will love anything that you pick :)
- Both cuts are similar in the amount of facets and both will take a lot of dirt to lose their sparkle if they are cut well. And brilliant cuts are not more expensive at all! Maybe he saw you looking at a brilliant cut and made up a reason to jack up the price...
- Any ring will get soap scum and dirt on it regardless of the cut. Both of those are good cuts, so whats really important here is the quality of the diamond. Even the best cuts cannot make a dull diamond sparkle. Choose whichever you like the style of best.
- I LOVE princess cut rings, that's what i want, BUT on the downside, they are become more commonplace now, so if you want to be unique, go for something else. It will be special no matter which you choose, it doesn't matter if it's a 2 cent ring so long as the sentiment is there. Why not let him choose and surprise you with it?!
- Round brilliant have more facets, which mean they sparkle the most out of every cut, the more the facets, the more they're going to reflect light. Princess cut don't get 'dirty' faster. How could they? ANY diamond you wear is gonna get dirty and lose it's sparkle if you don't keep it clean, it has NOTHING to do with the shape of the cut. So don't worry about that. You just need to try on each one and see what you feel looks best on you. Round brilliants are also the more expensive cut, yes that's true, when I got my ring appraised I was talking with the jeweler and he said that the value of the round brilliant just went up but no other cut. So don't listen to that jeweler. Not to mention, you should get a couple more opinions and try a few more stores. But don't let that sway you away from that cut. You need to try on the diamonds yourself and decide by what they look like on your hand.
- My princess cut is in a very high setting and does get dirty easy. However, 10 seconds in the jewelry cleaner and it's good as new!
- A stunning well appointed diamond, is stunning in any shape. Choose the shape that you love. That having been said, I personally love & adore the princess but still opted for a brilliant, because the brilliants are timeless. How many brides of the 80s and early 90s would die to trade in their marquis cut? I fear the princess cut may go the same route. Just my two cents, brides out there with the princess, do not hate me; I am probably just being silly
- I think you need to try some more rings on. The only real difference between princess and brilliant cut diamonds is the style - the rest depends on the quality of the diamond. A brilliant cut is more traditional/classic, and it emphasizes the sparkle ("brilliance") of the stone. A princess cut is going to look more modern/trendy.
